We are so grateful you are interested in volunteering with us! We ask that all potential volunteers attend a new volunteer orientation covering our history, mission, positions currently available and then a tour of our facility. After the orientation, you will have an opportunity to meet with our Volunteer Coordinator and discuss your questions and service options. If you feel  Fishline is a fit for you, a training day will be scheduled based on the position chosen. Please see a brief description of volunteer positions available below. All positions at each of our locations will include training and ongoing volunteer support. We do our best to find the perfect fit for all volunteers, however, not all positions are always available. Volunteers are welcomed to cross-train and try more than one position. 

Positions at the Food Bank

Sorters/Stockers:  Volunteers in the food market (food bank) sort, shelve, and re-package food and other items.  They help keep the market organized and clean, help unload deliveries, and are responsible for receiving all food donations.  This position involves team work and some lifting (up to 40lbs). Volunteers can work an 8:30am to 12pm shift, 12:00 to 3:30, or on Wednesday there is also a 3:30pm to 7pm shift.

Receptionists are one of the first faces our clients come into contact with at our food bank. This position requires a kind demeanor, great customer service, and light computer skills. Their duties include interacting with clients, light paper work, basic computer entries, and attention to detail. Careful listening, patience, flexibility, compassion, and a good sense of humor are assets as a receptionist. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, receptionist can work a 9:30am to 12:30pm shift, 12:30 to 3:30pm. On Wednesday there is a 12:30pm to 4pm & 4pm to 7:30pm shift.

Checkout volunteers assist with counting the “Fishbucks” clients use during their shopping trip. They also help bag groceries and enter data on the computer. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, checkout volunteers can work a 9:30am to 12:30pm shift, 12:30 to 3:30pm. On Wednesday there is a 1pm to 4pm & 4pm to 7pm shift.

Pick Up/Delivery Drivers   

Driver volunteers hold a very important role in our organization. Each of our locations require driver support.

Food Bank: Drivers go to local stores and pick up donated food and deliver the items to the Food Bank.  Currently we collect from Central Market, Safeway, Walmart, Red Apple and Starbucks. These routes usually take about an hour to an hour and a half to complete.  Driver volunteers must be able to lift boxes up to 60lbs and have a large vehicle to use or be comfortable driving one of Fishline’s large vans.

Positions in our office:

Client Service Assistants are the very first contact with all clients, donors, and community members that come through our doors at the food bank. This position requires the most training and commitment due to confidentiality and working directly for our staff. CSA responsibilities include, but are not limited to, accepting monetary donations, scheduling client appointments with advocates, answering multi-line phones and registering clients for services. Careful listening, patience, flexibility, compassion, strong phone and computer skills, and a good sense of humor are assets as a CSA. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, greeters can work a 9:30am to 12:30pm shift, 12:30 to 3:30pm. On Wednesday there is a 12:30pm to 4pm & 4pm to 7:30pm shift. *This position requires a screening and second interview process.

Second Season Thrift Store

Sorters/ Pricers: Sorters/pricer will go through donated items and prepare them to be priced.  There is a lot of lifting, bending, stretching and reaching involved, and volunteers must be able to stand for long periods of time, usually for 4 hours.  Sorted items are then priced and put in the department on the floor.  Sorter/pricers are responsible for keeping the shop clean and organized at all times plus “end of day” clean-up.  Sorters are to be present both before and after the shop opens so the cashier is not left alone.

Cashier: Cashier’s duties include handling the cash register, cleaning the shop, organizing merchandise, answering phones, and working with customers. Two daily shifts consist of 4 hours each: 9:30-1:30 and 1:30-5:30. Cashiers must be comfortable with money, trustworthy, greet and be courteous to all; and work with merchandise.  

Drivers: Drivers are needed to pick-up unusable donations and take them to other agencies, like Goodwill. Personal vehicles can be used or drivers can use a Fishline van. Drivers should be able to lift small to moderately heavy items in and out of the van. This would be a once a week early afternoon commitment taking no more than two hours.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Lead Gardener: Our backyard garden provides produce for our market. It doesn’t get much fresher! A Lead Gardener would commit to a regular day of watering and weeding, sign up to be called upon for work parties, help our garden coordinator schedule maintenance, and promote the program.

Birthday Fairy: Similar to a holiday gift program for children, our Birthday Fairy Program allows parents to request gifts for their children. Our Birthday Fairies receive the requests and choose presents for the children based on their ages and interests.
